The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of the oldest testimonies to an Italian presence in Bohemia and to a cultural rapport between the Italian and Czech peoples.
The early Italian community on Czech territory comprised mainly of stone-masons and builders invited in by Ferdinand I to build Prague Castle. This tiny community found solace, for things religious, amongst the Clementinum Jesuits who, in 1560, constructed an oratory in which masses were celebrated in Italian. In 1590, when the oratory was downsized, construction of the new Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was begun and it was consecrated in 1600.
The Chapel often described as “being so graceful that it would be difficult to find its equal in Italy” was the subject of lengthy specialist studies and widely extolled for the absolute purity and maturity of its architecture.
When considered from an artistic evolution viewpoint, it certainly is one of the most significant monuments in the whole of Prague and worthy of special interest. SIAD’s contribution to the restoration project of the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Prague demonstrates that the company’s interest is not limited to keeping the richness of a country alive via its economic and production activities but that it also espouses, wherever it has a presence, the Italian values of spirituality, ethics and esthetics by involving itself in matters cultural.
The SIAD Group has decided to invest in culture, a privileged medium via which it can communicate (both internally and externally) its own values and establish a dialogue with the local community.
